*PAST EVENTS*

On Saturday, April 20,2013, many people gathered at United Way to build the new community youth garden.

Big winter wind blowing away the January thaw. Stampedes of snow horses flying over the fields. Winter sun trying to break through leaden clouds, creating that half light in one direction and long, moving shadows in the other. Time has come for planning our spring gardens.

United Way, along with its partner organizations, Fleming College and Toward Balance Support Network, has begun planning a community youth garden to open in a few months. This garden will provide the opportunity for young people in our community to discover the joys of gardening. Best of all, this is just the beginning of a network of gardens serving communities across the city.

If you would like to be part of this exciting project, come, join us in the garden. Just contact either Penny or Evelyn at United Way. Call 705-878-5081 or email office@ckl.united way.ca. There’s always room in the garden.

The 2011 OEN Fall Conference and AGM

The 2011 OEN Fall Conference and AGM was a huge success. Thank you to everyone who made it out. We will be posting information about the 2012 conference in the new year.

Agenda: Click HERE to see conference agenda

Date: November 18-20, 2011

Location: Camp Kawartha

Conference Theme: The A B Cs of Community Restoration through Earth Literacy

“Dr. Seuss books recognize the need to build vocabulary in an incremental way, through single syllable words, repetition, rhyme and fun. Children can be taught, but only if they want to learn what you are trying to teach. I propose, therefore, that, if the environmental sector wants to bring the main stream back to the earth, we must build both the vocabulary that will allow people to understand what is being asked, and also engage the public in wanting to learn what it is we are teaching. We need to use social, enjoyable and measurable techniques that are accessible to everyone, understandable by everyone and possible for everyone.”

Frank Smith, Toward Balance Support Network, OEN Steering Committee member

COMMUNITY GARDENS

A community garden is for everyone to share. Toward Balance Support Network in partnership with the Health Unit, Fleming College, the City of Kawartha Lakes and interested gardeners and gardening organizations hope to build gardens that will help to provide clean safe low cost food, beautify the city and allow people the opportunity to garden for enjoyment. Food can be grown to supplement family meals and assist social institutions. Flowers and trees can beautify homes, businesses, and the city as a whole. The experience of family gardening can enrich the fabric of families everywhere. Everyone is welcome! Please visit www.communitygarden.ca for more information. LIVING LIGHTLY

In the winter of 2009 we began a series of community conversations around the David Chernushenko film, Be The Change. The conversations are designed to help communities to move from wishes to actions in the field of the environment. The first was held in Fenelon Falls in February, the second, in Bobcaygeon in March.

LOCAL FOOD

In January, 2009 we became partners in a local food charter. Going forward we hope to engage the entire city in building and supporting local food as good government, good community, good stewardship of the land, and good economics.
